February 14th

If anyone has no yet noticed, it was February 14th rather recently, more commonly known as Valentines day.  This day marks the peak of a flurry of articles and blog posts complaining that this day has become ‘far too commercialised,’ that love ‘doesn’t have a price tag.’  I’m here to disagree, strongly.  I feel that the commercialisation is merely just as a result of heavy marketing on the behalf of business and individuals who can’t think for themselves how to express there love in an original and memorable way for their special one.

If you as an individual cannot think beyond the cleashay card, box of chocolates or flowers to give to your target of affection then ask yourself, do you really actually care for this person?  Do you truly ‘love’ them?  In my opinion, which I’m sure you are all desperate to know, is that origionality is either a result of creative thinking, or much more likely and something I feel is closer to the truth is that original ideas come from the fact you truly do care for that one person.

This leads to the conclusion that a tacky generic gift is either because you do not truly care for this person, it’s not a real relationship or you simply may not have been going out long enough (but just enough to justify the need to get something).  I don’t really want to hear the complaint ‘I was too busy,’ of ‘I don’t have enough money,’ seeing as some of the best ideas are those done completely on the fly and don’t cost you a penny.

Another reason for the attacks on this day is probably as a result of that individual always being alone on that day or not having anyone to give a gesture of affection too.  In this case, may I tell you to the following quote from someone who once lived in the flat next door to mine, “grow up, get a haircut and sort your life out.”

So to wrap this up, stop attacking this day, yes some feel the need to give into the commercialisation and not come up with anything original, but then again, since when was any holiday original or non-commercialised?  There will always be the fools and the those not truly invested to care about taking the time and effort to come up with an original idea or at least something that isn’t generic.
